A comprehensive search and rescue operation is presently under way in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of missing sailing vessels loaded with humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Cuba.
Authorities in Mexico has sent naval assets and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were had on board a minimum of 9 sailors, as stated by a military release.
The boats had been expected to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, authorities reported.
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation endures repeated national electricity failures.
"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are equipped with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson for the convoy said.
The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.
"The group is co-operating fully with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had transported 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.
That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" following the name of the vessel in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation began.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""critical" supply shortages, with more than fifty thousand operations postponed in Cuba because of energy rationing.
Diplomatic pressure have increased in recent months, with remarks from various officials highlighting the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.
Reacting to recent statements, a senior government figure stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.
The naval forces said it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to locate the boats and guarantee the safety of the people on board.
To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
