The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
