The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The core mechanic involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
