The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
