Excitement is building for the horror series the Derry series, that's been earning acclaim and incorporating references from the broader King universe. Just one day after launch, the broadcaster announced that episode two will arrive early, scheduled ideally for the spookiest night.
Beginning on the last day of October at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, the second episode of It: Welcome to Derry will premiere on the streaming service, prior to its traditional TV airing. The remaining installments of the series run will be released on Sundays on HBO and HBO Max, leading up to the final episode on December 14th.
Taking place within the Derry mythology, Welcome to Derry is inspired by the original story while building upon the universe brought to life by director Andy Muschietti in It and It Chapter Two. The original It centered on young characters battling supernatural evils, thus it's suitable that the prequel follows in those footsteps. However, the debut of the streaming show demonstrates it aimed to increase the tension, delivering heightened horror than Muschietti’s films and establishing a brutal tone for the rest of the season.
Taking place in the 1960s, the series introduces a new generation of grown-ups and kids living in a outwardly charming locale hiding a dark secret. Derry follows a vicious, repeating pattern—one marked by aggression, prejudice, and paranormal events, as a monstrous presence resurfaces once every three decades. Although the series might sound like it skews too close to the movies at first, what sets apart the HBO Max series is its dual perspective—unfolding through the viewpoints of young and old simultaneously. Younger characters remain particularly vulnerable to It's terror, but older characters aren’t spared confronting their own nightmares stemming from Derry’s deep-seated bigotry and lurking supernatural forces.
Episode 2 premieres on October 31 at 12 a.m. Pacific Time.
