Wessels will miss for the Springboks' upcoming test matches.
Springbok prop Jan-Hendrik Wessels has been suspended of nine games for grabbing Josh Murphy's private parts during the Bulls' URC victory over Connacht.
The altercation took place in the early stages of the narrow victory against Connacht on last Friday, with Connacht forward Murphy receiving a 20-minute red card after reacting angrily by hitting the South African on the head area.
Following Murphy reported the incident to referee Mike Adamson, the event was checked by the television match official, who concluded no conclusive video evidence.
Wessels stayed on the field until he was substituted in the later stages of the match.
While the URC confirmed that Murphy's 20-minute red card was overturned by a governing body, Wessels was found to have violated the code of conduct, which declares:
"Any athlete should not do anything that is contrary to the spirit of good sportsmanship. This includes grabbing, pulling or compressing the genitals."
The panel determined that the contact met the red card threshold and warranted a three-month ban, the shortest ban under international rugby regulations for such an offence.
Nonetheless, the player's ban was reduced by three weeks because of his good conduct prior to and at the proceedings and his good record.
Wessels and the Pretoria-based team are entitled to appeal, but currently, the ban will rule the 24-year-old out of the Springboks' fall internationals against Japan, France, Italy and the Irish team.
He will additionally be absent for the his club's league matches against Glasgow, the Emirates Lions and the Sharks, as well as Investec Champions Cup fixtures with Bègles and Saints.
The prop has won 10 caps for the Springboks and was part of their tri-nations champion team over the summer.
The Connacht player, in contrast, is available to play against the Irish rivals in Saturday's inter-provincial derby after being exonerated.
