Senegal's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and European Breakthrough

This move put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to the title and earning best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. He is frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
