Russian President Vladimir Putin Pledges Uninterrupted Oil Supplies to India in Defiance of US Sanctions

In a defiant statement to Western nations, President Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to maintain “unbroken” shipments of crude oil to India. The announcement came as the two leaders met in New Delhi and affirmed their relationship were “immune to outside influence.”

A Message Aimed at the United States

Putin's comments, issued after the annual summit, seemed to be a direct challenge at Washington, that have tried to pressure New Delhi into curtailing its historical links with Moscow. The backdrop is in response to recent Washington's moves, such as the introduction of tariffs on India because of its buying of Russian oil.

“Russia is a reliable exporter of fuel and everything needed for the growth of India’s economy,” Putin remarked. “Russia is prepared to continue guaranteeing the steady delivery of fuel for the booming Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, without mentioning oil explicitly, echoed the focus by stating that “energy security has been a robust and crucial cornerstone of the India-Russia partnership.”

Defying American Pressure

Prior to the talks, in a TV appearance, Putin had criticized American pressure regarding India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “If the US has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, then why can't India have the equivalent access?”

The visit marked his first trip to India after the start of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi engaged in a deliberate effort to project that the friendship between the men persisted strongly.

A Warm Reception

Taking an rare move, Prime Minister Modi met Putin as he disembarked. They exchanged a hearty embrace akin to close allies before enjoying a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.
