New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans right away after his electoral win in November.
"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a well-known family.
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his modest Astoria digs.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants see such units as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the average income.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
