Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
