Below are the individuals who have been named so far.
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
