Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials expressed outrage after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "by death" following their release of a contentious video.

The Message That Triggered the Dispute

The clip, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly worked in defense or defense roles.

"Like us, you all made an pledge to defend and uphold this constitution," the officials declared in the brief video. "Currently, the risks to our democratic foundation aren't just from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can decline improper directives, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should reject improper directives. No one has to follow commands that break the law or our founding principles."

Trump's Incensed Reaction

The clip seemed to provoke a heated reaction from the ex-president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another message, he declared: "This represents really serious, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Officials React

Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats released a joint declaration denouncing the comments.

"Political violence has no position in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our country with exceptional loyalty and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."

The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to make certain the security of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical digital publications and withdraw his violent discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement continued.

Officials' Strong Reaction

The representatives who appeared in the video also published a response.

"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who love this country and took an pledge to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, coercion, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important responsibility."

"What's most telling is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the constitution and obligation to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They stated: "The entire nation must come together and censure the ex-president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a period for moral clarity."

Additional Governmental Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of government members."

He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and absolutely."

The Conservative official justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress telling soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."

The Republican leader also reportedly told journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and establish all that."

Administration Statement

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a reporter, "Does the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson said. "There are sitting members of the federal government who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the commander in chief's legal commands."

She added: "The sanctity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in disorder, and that's what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
