China Accuses United States of ‘Contradictory Stances’ Concerning Trade Levy Warning

Trump’s latest warning to introduce an further full import duty on items imported from China has been described as a “classic case” of US double standards, as stated by the Chinese government.

A representative of the ministry also stated that the nation could introduce its own unspecified “responsive actions” if the American leader follows through on his pledge, adding that the country was “fearless” of a potential trade conflict.

Last Friday, the former president retaliated at China’s decision to reinforce its rules for foreign shipments of rare earths, charging China of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “captive”.

Additionally, he vowed to pull out of a planned summit with Beijing’s head of state Xi Jinping, which was expected to take place during a summit in Seoul before the month ends.

His statements on Friday rattled stock exchanges, with the S&P 500 share index dropping over two and a half percent, marking its steepest fall since April.

These statements revived apprehensions of a trade conflict between the US and China.

Earlier this year, the both nations had agreed to remove triple-digit tariffs on each other’s products, which had raised the prospect of trade halting between the economic powers.

As a result, American import duties on Chinese goods subject to an additional thirty percent tariff compared with the start of the year, while American products entering the country incur a import levy.

The most recent comments from China – issued by the Commerce Ministry in the form of written responses to media inquiries – mirrored terminology from the height of the latest commercial tensions.

They criticised US export restrictions on chips and semi-conductors while supporting Beijing’s restrictions on exports on key elements as “standard procedures” to safeguard domestic safety and that of the global community.

The official said that for “an extended period”, the US had “broadened the definition” of domestic safety, abused foreign shipment regulations and “adopted unfair treatments against Beijing.

“Resorting to trade levy ultimatums is not the correct approach to interact with China,” the official said.

“The nation’s view” on a import duty dispute has remained consistent: we wish to avoid one, but we are fearless of one.”

The previous week, Beijing declared it was tightening overseas sale regulations on rare earths and additional substances critical for cutting-edge industry.

The action was viewed as a important measure, as the nation handles about ninety percent of the planet’s critical minerals, which are used in items such as photovoltaic modules and handheld devices.

The recent comments from the US and China are being seen by observers as a means of enhancing bargaining power ahead of forthcoming discussions.

Remains uncertain whether a summit between Trump and Xi Jinping, scheduled at a high-level meeting in the Republic of Korea later this month, will go ahead.
