Air Force Staff Sergeant Healing After Sustaining Gunshot Wounds in the Nation's Capital

A member of the National Guard is showing improvement after he was gravely wounded in an targeted attack last month in Washington DC.

The family of the 24-year-old soldier, 24, report "the injury to his head is gradually improving and that he's starting to 'look more like himself,'" said the state's chief executive Patrick Morrisey.

The family anticipates the Air Force staff sergeant to be in intensive treatment for the next two to three weeks, and they feel hopeful about his recovery, said the governor.

The serviceman was one of a pair of West Virginia National Guard members shot when a gunman opened fire in proximity to the White House on November 26th. His fellow guardsmember, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, died from her injuries.

"We continue to ask all West Virginians and the nation's citizens for their thoughts and prayers!" Morrisey declared.

The governor attended a candlelight gathering on last Friday night for Staff Sgt Wolfe at a local secondary school in Inwood, West Virginia, where the guardsman was once a student.

A clergyman at the event read a statement from the soldier's parents, Jason and Melody Wolfe.

"We know that there is a difficult journey to go," they wrote, as reported by local news outlet outlets.

"But our belief keeps us optimistic. We remain thankful for the well-wishes and the encouragement from people all over the globe."

Previously, the governor said Staff Sgt Wolfe had responded to a nurse with a positive gesture and was able to wiggle his feet.

Law enforcement have formally accused the alleged gunman, an individual from Afghanistan named the suspect, with premeditated homicide and assault with intent to kill.

Before coming to the US in two years ago, he was once a member of a special forces unit in a CIA-backed unit that worked with American troops in Afghanistan.

The injured airman was one of 2,000 National Guard members whom the former president deployed to the nation's capitol in August as part of his policy initiative in Democratic-led cities.

In the aftermath of the incident, the former president said he wanted an additional five hundred National Guard troops sent to the nation's capital.

The Trump administration has also referenced the attack as a reason for additional immigration crackdown measures.

They have cancelled all citizenship ceremonies for foreign nationals from 19 countries that were part of a entry restriction announced over the recent season, including the suspect's home country.
