Formula 1 has unveiled the official terminology that will be used to reference the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is implementing what is potentially the largest regulation change in its competitive history next season, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the required adoption of 100% sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which maintain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher energy storage, necessitating major innovations in the aero packages.

Over a race distance, pilots will tactically deploy ERS energy – sometimes even hot laps – to extract the best lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a mix of viewers, including long-time followers and newcomers, to understand which terms would improve understanding of the key features of the upcoming rules.

The key objective was to render a range of advanced technical aspects of the competition as straightforward as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for some systems – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the active aerodynamics – have been abandoned in favor of descriptive names that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the innovation.

Key Technical Innovations

According to rule-makers that racers will have more power to determine tactics regarding energy deployment, energy recovery, and efficiency.

The 2026 rules mandate a range of settings that will be shown on television graphics to enhance the audience's understanding of the strategic duel.

• Attack Mode: This replaces the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy deployable when a competitor is within one second the leading car to assist with an pass.
• Boost Mode: This is a manual power boost from the energy recovery system that can be used in offensive or defensive moves. It provides the driver maximum power at the activation of a control.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be reduced in size and weight relative to current models, with a wheelbase shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight reduced by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately a significant margin, although squads will inevitably claw this back as they refine their designs.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will employ moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will open on the straight sections to cut resistance and increase straightline speed and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will keep 18-inch wheel rims, but the rubber compounds will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.
